Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing a cake.

Consider your budget

If you have a lower end budget, but you want a beautiful cake to show for the ceremonial cake cutting, then choose a smaller cake and use sheet cakes to serve from. If budget is not a problem you might want to consider turning your cakes into dessert cakes for your guests.

Your style or theme

You do not want a Victorian style cake with a "Cinderella" type reception. In a nutshell, what I mean is if you have a simple and elegant wedding you want the same in your cake.

Your style of dress

If you have very ornate bodice, you might choose a less ornate cake. If you dress very simple, a little more decoration on the cake would be lovely. Just remember, in the picture you want a beautiful balance between you and the cake as you will be standing behind it. It should compliment you not outshine you. This is your day not the cake's.

Your height

Your height should also be a factor in the cake you choose. If you are 5 feet tall you certainly do not want a seven foot cake. It does not hurt for the cake to be as tall as you or even a little taller, but you still want to be the centerpiece at the cake cutting ceremony and a towering cake will overshadow you.

Colors

A decorator can match your colors with close accuracy. however, extremely dark or very bright colors are difficult.

Fresh Flowers

It is always a plus when your decorator and florist have worked together before. Usually, reputable florists and bakers would prefer not to use the bride as a middle man. Once you've chosen your flowers and your cake we will make a phone call or a visit to each other if necessary to be sure we know each others needs for that day.

Silk Flowers

If using silk flowers, and you are specific about the colors and type, you will have to purchase them elsewhere and bring them to me and I will arrange them on the cake. I do have lots of flowers, but sometimes brides want more specific kinds than I have in stock.

Gumpaste Flowers

They are a wonderful alternative to real and especially to silks. These flowers are purchased and can be kept by you for many years. The prices of these vary but are usually less costly than real flowers. Gumpaste flowers come in many different varieties and colors. They can be used as bouquets to carry, as centerpieces, and of course especially on the cake. One day I hope to have pictures of all the gumpaste flowers on my site.... one day at a time.

Rentals

As I am working on providing additional cake table decorations and I do have some very wonderful pieces to choose from. I add new pieces from time to time. These decorations are something that must be seen and discussed at the time of your appointment. For now, with my limits, if you want some candle pieces or screens behind the cake as you can see in some of my pictures, Simple to Elegant has a wonderful selection at very economical prices. Hopefully in the near future I will be able to completely decorate every table in the bride’s desire but currently silver and crystal is all I have to add.

I do from time to time rent my cake stands to home decorators that have some of the unusual ones that I have. If your Aunt or someone you know is making your cake and you like one of my stands, if the stand is not previously promised, you are welcome to rent it. I have lots to choose from.
